After a day or so spent messing about with an old PC trying to get a servicable NAS box running, I’ve finally caved in and ordered a new PC. It’s a Dell machine from the factory outlet, sporting a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB RAM, 250GB SATA HD, DVD RW, and a 256MB Nvidia graphics card. I’ll add the 320GB SATA drive from the current PC, and probably buy another 2GB RAM to beef it up a bit.
Once that’s up and running I’ll use my current PC to replace my FreeBSD server, then use the FreeBSD server as the NAS box.
Were my cast-offs not good enough for you????
Not really. It doesn’t like the HDs that are in it, consequently it’s slower than a really really slow thing.
That’s slow!
I wish I had 3GB of ram in this laptop. Think it only takes 2GB max though.
I might get another 1GB for the laptop when I get around to ordering.
Blimey, when did laptop memory prices halve? Last time I looked it would have cost me about £160 for 2GB, just checked and I can now get it for £70.49!
£56.34 if you know Alex’s Crucial account details :)
ALEX!
I’m due a £55 council tax rebate :)
I’m sure something can be arranged :)
Bizarrely it’s 6p cheaper if you buy two separate 1GB modules instead of a pack of two.
Maybe you get a matched pair if you buy them in a pack of two? (unlikely)
I will wait until my council tax cheque arrives and then contact you or Richie :)
It seems crazy wanting 2GB of ram but firefox and photoshop seem to use loads of memory. I think the first pc I built back in 1997 had 16mb!
Luxury. Mine had 640K and no hard disc ;-)
The first one I bought had 4MB RAM and a 120MB HD I think.
I was late to the world of pcs. My first HD was 3.2GB and cost about £200. I still have it somewhere. The processor was 133MHz, can’t remember the make (don’t think it was amd, there was another company around that time making pc processors).
Cyrix
Yup, think that’s the fella.
