Suit and Tie Guy

Proof that I do wear a suit occasionally.

Presidential Handover
Terry Lee hands over the role of President to myself

This means the correct method of addressing me is now "El Presidente", although you don’t need the cricket bat.

Canon 5D and a Sigma 10-20

If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you use a lens designed for a crop sensor on a full-frame body, then wonder no longer.

My Sigma 10-20 is designed for 1.6x crop bodies only, but will fit quite happily onto the 5D, and produces images as follows.

Do you think I’ve got enough camera kit?

Too much kit?

This makes me feel good

Amazon have bumped up the price of the 5D and 24-105 kit by nearly £200 since I ordered it on Monday. Looks like I managed to time it perfectly.

Full frame fun with a 5D

This thing is nice. Slightly larger and heftier than the 30D, and compared with the crop cameras the viewfinder is superb. I’ve not really had a chance to play with it much yet, other than a quick test shot taken at ISO3200 which is remarkably clean, even before attacking it with Noise Ninja.

Bellowhead – Komedia, Bath

To be honest, the stage was too small for the massed ranks of Bellowhead, the lighting seemed designed to make it impossible to see the band, and the sound was a bit shit to start with, but as always with Bellowhead it was a superb night involving plenty of silly dancing.

They also played a couple of tracks I’ve not heard before tonight, but Steve was upset that they didn’t play Jordan.

Setlist:
Yarmouth Town
Trip to Bucharest/The Flight of the Folk Mutants Parts I & II
Kafoozalum
Whiskey is the Life of Man
I Drew My Ship Across the Harbour
Cold Blows the Wind
Hopkinson’s Favourite
Fakenham Fair
Haul Away
Prickle Eye Bush
Unclothed Nocturnal Manuscript Crisis
Cholera Camp
Rochdale Coconut Dance
Fire Marengo
Sloe Gin

London Town

#25 – The Silence of the Lambs

A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

Another classic film, and one I’ve only just got around to buying on DVD which means I’ve probably not seen it for 10 years or so, so tonight’s viewing is long overdue.

Missed it

Current Status: There was no one to receive the goods at the delivery point so a card was left.

City Link seem to have an aversion to delivering to neighbouring houses, but I’ve booked tomorrow afternoon off to pick it up from the depot and have a play around.

Update: The bastards have moved. I arranged to collect it thinking that the depot was still where it’s always been, just on the Bath edge of Bristol, but they’ve moved across town to the arse-end of Bristol by the M5.

More shopping

The lure of an empty credit card proved to be too much, and therefore earlier today I had a minor accident involving the aforementioned card, and Amazon. Courtesy of that minor transgression, there’s a Canon 5D body and 24-105L IS lens kit on it’s way, along with two new 4GB CF cards from 7dayshop.

Michael McGoldrick, John Joe Kelly, Ed Boyd – Widcombe Social Club

My second trip to Bath Folk Club, and yet again Jim Gallagher was supporting.

The main musical event was a very enjoyable two hours of Irish music from Michael McGoldrick (Flutes, Uilleann Pipes, Mandolin), John Joe Kelly (Bodhran, Mandolin) and Ed Boyd (Guitar, Bouzouki).

#24 – Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here! This is the war room!

We managed to miss the 45th anniversary of the release of "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" by a couple of weeks, but this’ll have to do.

Film night

Following a trip into town where I ended up in HMV, tonight I’ve watched The Incredible Hulk, National Treasure, and Wall Street, leaving National Treasure 2 and Kung Fu Panda for tomorrow. I’m now finishing off the night with some more Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Distinction

Despite convincing myself that I’d managed to balls-up the exam for the Certificate in Information Management Security Principles course that I did last week, it turns out I got 90%, well over the 80% required for a distinction.

Trip to Trowbridge

Hugh Cornwell may have upset the residents of Trowbridge with a recent song entitled "Please Don’t Put Me on a Slow Boat to Trowbridge", but it’s still worth a visit occasionally.

Today I popped over there to visit BCH Camping to see what tents they had, having left my large tent behind at Cropredy last year I needed a replacement. Not only did I find a tent I liked, but I ended up with a new pair of Berghaus walking boots as well. For a spur of the moment shopping trip it proved somewhat expensive. However I can at least convince myself that I saved £105 as both the tent and the boots were reduced.

Richard Thompson – 1000 Years of Popular Music – Derngate, Northampton

A musical tour through history tonight, courtesy of Richard Thompson, ably assisted by Judith Owen and and Debra Donkin. Richard arrived on-stage complete with a Hurdy-Gurdy and started things off with a song from 1290 entitled Praise Queen of Heaven. They then spent the next hour covering the period up to 1900, including a few minutes of Opera before which he jokingly asked for all the exits to be locked.

The second half covered 1900 onwards, including rather oddly, Nelly Furtado’s Maneater partly in Latin. The only downside was when a song by "the other west country band" turned out to be "Everybody’s Got to Learn Sometime" by The Korgi’s, rather than anything by the mighty Wurzels.

We even made it back to Stafford before the snow.

Ice Ice Baby

Well most of the snow has gone, but has been replaced by sheet ice, and my road is covered from end to end. A couple of people leaving tried to turn right at the end, and ended up saying hello to the kerb opposite, then as I was leaving two cars turned up into my road and just sat there spinning their front wheels on the ice.

It could be interesting getting the car out this afternoon if it doesn’t warm up a bit.

Fun in the snow

I went out in the X-Trail tonight to take Father over to Bristol. Most of the roads were perfectly clear, it was only my parents road and the one in Bristol we were headed to that had any snow on them. I did at least prove that the ABS works, albeit in a slighly scary fashion, and that the 4wd-lock also works.

We only saw one crash, a car looked like it had spun into the barriers at the side of the road in St Philip’s Causeway where the snow was settling a bit. However going by the smell and the smoke, the Audi that slithered it’s way backwards up a road in Bristol while I was waiting will need a new clutch very shortly.

Bizarre eating habits of cats

Scully has taken to hoiking a lump of food out of the bowl, taking it into the dining room and eating it off the floor.

Daft animal.
