#132 – Million Dollar Baby

The fifth and last of the pugilism-themed films for the moment, mainly because I haven’t actually got any more.

#72 – Raging Bull

This has been sat in my "to-watch" pile since I picked it up at the start of the year. Seeing as I’ve just finished my run through the series of Rocky films, this seemed like the logical film to follow on with. In order to continue the pugilistic theme, I might have to finish the night with Million Dollar Baby.

#191 Wo hu cang long

That’s Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon for the culturally ignorant, a film I don’t think I’ve seen since I imported the DVD from abroad back in early 2001.

The Bad Shepherds – Gloucester Guildhall

A trek up the M5 tonight to see Ade Edmondson and his band The Bad Shepherds again. Support came from his daughter Ella Edmondson and her band, the bassist seemed somewhat lucky to still be standing given the amount of drugs he looked to have taken.

The line-up of The Bad Shepherds has changed since I last saw them in the summer, now officially comprising two musicians and “that twat off the telly” since the departure of Maartin Allcock, the band has been augmented by Brad Lang on double bass during the tour. This brings a slightly different and somewhat less guitar-orientated sound to their music.

There were a few new songs in the setlist tonight, but unfortunately they’d dropped the Ramones medley and a few of the lengthier jokes.

Setlist:
I Fought the Law
Up Against the Wall
Whole Wide World
Rise
Down in the Tube Station at Midnight
The Model
Teenage Kicks / Whisky in the Jar
(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding
Friday Night, Saturday Morning
Gary Gilmore’s Eyes
London Calling
Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t've)
Once in a Lifetime
All Around My Hat
Yan, Tyan, Tethera, Methera!
Up the Junction
God Save the Queen

White Riot

Bellowhead – Cheese and Grain, Frome

Support tonight came from the duo Belshazzars Feast, one of whom, Paul Sartin, comprises one eleventh of Bellowhead. Their repertoir included Mozart, Music for a Found Harmonium, and the “Just One Cornetto” advert.

The mass ranks of Bellowhead took took the stage for what turned out to be probably the best sounding gig I’ve been to at the Cheese and Grain. Usually the sound is quite muddy, but tonight everything sounded crisp and clear tonight.

Setlist:
Roll Her Down the Bay
Trip to Bucharest / The Flight of the Folk Mutants, Parts 1 & 2
Fakenham Fair
Cold Blows the Wind
Unclothed Nocturnal Manuscript Crisis
Cholera Camp
Whisky is the Life of Man
Northern Frisk
The Handweaver and the Factory Maid
Kafoozalum / The Priest’s Miss
A Begging I Will Go
Rochdale Coconut Dance
Jiggery Pokerwork / Haul Away / Seven Stars
Fire Marengo
Sloe Gin

#97 – Jaws

If you watch the movie ‘Jaws’ backwards, it’s a movie about a shark that keeps throwing up people until they have to open a beach.

Duxford Autumn Air Display 2009

Another Sunday, another trek across country for an air display, this time to Duxford, not that many miles from Old Warden where we were last Sunday. This time we had the added honour of a trip in Father’s new Citroen C5 rather than my middle-aged Nissan X-Trail. We weren’t blessed with the fantastic weather that we’d seen at Old Warden, the day started off grey and overcast.

After a few spots of rain early afternoon it eventually cleared up just before the end of the display giving a few brief minutes of glorious sunshine.

A gentle stroll

Instead of keeping to our original plan which was to spend all afternoon watching films, Al suggested we go for a quick walk armed with cameras for an hour or so. 5 hours and 9.25 miles later we finally made it home again, that’s the last time I trust Al with planning a route.

He’s still insists that we walked no more than 5 miles, but the map doesn’t lie.

Shuttleworth Autumn Air Display 2009

The third trip to Old Warden this year, and the best weather we’ve seen so far. Whilst the cloud did make an appearance during the afternoon, it was an aesthetically pleasing cloud and added some atmosphere to some of the photos. As mentioned before it was the first outing with my new 100-400 L IS lens, and it couldn’t have gone better, the only downside being the aforementioned need for a larger bag. Unfortunately the gusty wind yet again meant that the Edwardians were kept in the hangar, I still don’t believe that they actually fly.

Next weekend will see a trip to Duxford provided the weather holds, and that will be it until next May.

100-400L IS

I can see why people consider the Canon 100-400L IS to be the perfect airshow lens, today was my first day out with mine and it’s superb.

The quest for the perfect camera bag

Over the years I’ve gone through a seemingly endless succession of camera bags. I seem to have a bit of a bag-fetish in general, it’s the only way I can explain owning 5 courier bags.

Currently I’ve got 5 camera bags, and there’s the two that have been passed on to other people, however I still don’t have the ideal bag for all occasions. Packing my kit for Shuttleworth tomorrow proved a bit of a squeeze even in my largest bag, a copy of a Domke F1-X. Having packed it with my 30D, 5D, 17-40/4L, 24-105/4L, 300/4L, 100-400L, plus straps, batteries, and CF cards, I struggled to get the thing closed. Obviously this gives me an ideal excuse to buy another bag. Now what should I get?

Update: The search didn’t last long, Dixons had £50 off the Lowepro Vertex 300 which was one of my options.

One tooth lighter

After suffering from bad toothache for three weeks, a third trip to the dentist today left me lighter to the tune of one tooth. It put up a bit of a fight, but eventually came out in one piece. The downside is that the pain is now worse than that caused by the infection in the tooth, but all being well will clear up in a few days.
