Airplane

A brief interlude in our Top 250 Films project tonight to commemorate the passing of Leslie Nielsen at the weekend. Depending on time, we may finish off with an episode or two of Police Squad.

#118 – Princess Mononoke

I’m not much of a fan of Studio Ghibli, maybe this will help change my mind?

It’s back

After two trips up north and nearly two weeks away I have my Canon 1D Mk III back home again, and as far as I can tell it’s working perfectly. The LCD in the viewfinder works again, I’ve refitted all the bits I took off and reloaded my custom settings, or at least as many of them as I can remember.

Now I just need to find enough time and some suitable weather to go out and take photos.

Pop goes the telly

In between bouts of moving mailboxes and virtualising application servers I was sat downstairs catching up on last nights telly. Midway through NCIS the TV made an odd "pop" sound and shut itself off. I turned it back on and it did the same thing. It did this quite a few times leading to a diagnosis of "it’s broked".

Fortunately we have a newish Richer Sounds on the other side of town and in the email newsletter yesterday they were advertising a 50" LG for a decent price, and it turns out that they had one in stock. Even more fortunately it fitted in the back of the X-Trail with about 2mm to spare.

It’s up and running and looks stunning. It’s not actually much bigger than the 42" unit it’s replacing, the only issue is that the stand isn’t as tall so the centre speaker sits above the base of the screen, but that can be cured with a few bits of wood. I’m now giving it a good workout with a copy of Toy Story 3 which arrived this morning.

When is a repair not a repair?

Last week I sent my Canon 1D Mk III back to a Canon approved repair centre for some fixes to the AF which hadn’t yet been done. A week later it arrives back and all looks good, the repair form indicates that they’ve replaced a few parts, possibly the entire mirror assembly. On turning the camera on it shows that all my custom functions have been reset, but that’s not the end of the world. I reassemble the camera, refitting all the parts I removed before sending it in, then dig a lens out and fit it and fire off a few test shots just to make sure it works.

After playing around for a few minutes I realise the information in the viewfinder looks a bit odd. Half of the elements of one of the digits in the shots remaining counter no longer light up. Back into the box it goes, and I’m now waiting on the repair company confirming that they want me to post it back to them again. Looks like I’ll be without it for another week or so.

Spamalot – Theatre Royal, Bath

It was an early birthday present tonight, a trip to Nandos followed by a cultural evening at the theatre. Spamalot is a fantastic musical romp through the career of Monty Python. Loosely based around the plot of the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but with other sketches thrown in for good measure including the obligatory renditions of "Always look on the bright side of life". We were sat four rows from the front so had a perfect view, but you get the impression that it could really do with a slightly larger stage than that provided at the Theatre Royal.

#142 – Heat

A remake of Michael Mann’s earlier TV movie L.A. Takedown with a pretty stellar cast, including a rather young looking Natalie Portman.

#60 – Saving Private Ryan

Probably the best start to a film ever. The first half-hour or so of the landing on Omaha Beach is visually and aurally stunning on DVD. No doubt it’d be even better on Blu-ray.

#129 – Into the Wild

I’ve heard good things about this and missed it when it was on TV a few weeks ago, so picked it up on Blu-ray for a decent price.
