Fairport Convention – The Playhouse, Weston-Super-Mare

The fourth year running we’ve gone to see Fairport Convention on their Wintour, only this year they weren’t playing in Swindon so we had to head west to Weston-Super-Mare.

Support came from John Watterson in the guise of Fake Thackray playing the songs of Jake Thackray. Having never heard the original songs, I can’t comment on the authenticity, although his voice was a little indistinct at times. As tradition dictates Fairport joined in for the last song, in this case Sister Josephine, before taking over and launching into the first part of their set.

Unlike the last couple of years, there wasn’t a theme for the Wintour this year. Last year they’d not long release an album of new recordings of old songs, and the year before had seen a complete run-through of Babbacombe Lee. This year we got a good mix of the usual favourites and some tracks I’d not heard before, ending with the obligatory Meet on the Ledge. Same again next year I expect.
