Chew Valley with VC Walcot

Back out for the VC Walcot Easyriders ride again this morning after a few weeks off. A few first time riders were out today so Alf, our leader for the day, opted for plan B and a trip out to Chew Valley Lake and back. We had the obligatory stop for cake at Chew Valley, then finished off with a trip to Chelsea Road Cafe for yet more cake where we met up with the faster riders after their 60-mile loop.

The new wheels and shoes both worked well, there was a little discomfort from the right shoe to start with due to the higher arch than I’m used to, but it soon settled down and they proved to be very comfortable. The only downside was catching some grit in a brakepad and wearing a silver stripe onto one side of the front rim.

New wheels day

After some lengthy delays, mainly due to the popularity of the rims, my new road wheels have finally arrived and have been fitted to the Singular Firebird.

H Plus Son Archetype

They comprise H Plus Son Archetype rims on DT Swiss 350 hubs, with 25mm Continental GP4000s tyres.

Singular Firebird

Hopefully there will be time for a test ride after the Tour de France coverage today, then a proper run on the VC Walcot Easyriders club ride tomorrow morning.

Odd Down Cyclocross Race – 2013-06-26

After a few years absence, cyclocross made a return to Odd Down thanks to the sterling efforts of Andy Stewart. 3 racers battled it out in the under-12s race, followed by 40+ in the main race. Despite rolling his rear tyre off the rim towards the end Charles Coleman was the runaway winner, although the fact he helped design the course may have had something to do with it :)

Odd Down Circuit Races – 2013-06-18

The fourth race of the year at the new Odd Down Circuit, and the first one organised by Velo Club Walcot that I was able to attend. Fortunately the weather was a lot more pleasant than last time with a nice dry, still, and relatively warm evening. The sun even made an appearance towards the end.

Shuttleworth – June 2013

Partly due to poor weather, and partly due to a re-jigging of the schedule of airshows at Old Warden, this was our first trip of the year. The weather for the display started out cloudy but dry, turned to rain for a while, then ended up in glorious sunshine.

Special guests for the day were the Supermarine Spitfire Mk XIX from the BBMF, and a recently repainted Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk from Hangar 11.

Just over a year since we last saw the Spectacular Singing Songbook, it was back to the Colston Hall for another performance. We were treated to a 2.5 hour run through of the Elvis Costello back catalog albeit with slightly less reliance on the spinning wheel than last time.
