Freeborn John – Union Chapel, London

A much more intimate venue than the Derngate, and a much better performance, partly thanks to the excellent acoustics of the church-based venue. The only downside was that you couldn’t take drinks from the bar into the chapel, so it was a dry night. A last minute rush to get the tube back before the engineering works cocked things up meant we couldn’t hang around in the bar afterwards either.

Setlist:

Bishop Bray Speech (Stephen Burden)
Pillory Scene (Rev Hammer)
Whipping Song (Phil Johnstone)
Battle of Brentford (Justin Sullivan)
Elizabeth’s Great Gallop (Maddy Prior & Simon Friend)
Return to London (Rory McLeod)
England’s New Chains (Rev Hammer)
Oliver Cromwell Speech (Harry S Fulcher)
Bonny Besses (Rose Kemp)

Freeborn John – Derngate, Northampton

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect tonight, reviews of last night were somewhat uninspiring, however it had been the first night which might help explain things. Freeborn John is a folk-opera by Rev Hammer about the life of John Lilburne with a supporting cast of people like New Model Army, The Levellers, and Maddy Prior and many others.

Despite my misgivings, nearly everything went well, the only noticable cock-up was when Simon Friend made a complete mess of his duet with Maddy Prior, I reckon he was pissed. All in all a thoroughly good evening, although a little short.

Same again on Saturday in London.

New Model Army – Oxford Academy

Tonights gig came complete with a free sauna as someone forgot to turn the air-con on until the first encore. Very good, but very very hot.

New Model Army – Hobbits, Weston Super Mare.

Tonight we went to see New Model Army in Weston Super Mare. A nice low-key warm up gig before their Beautiful Days appearance tomorrow evening, there were probably only 200 people in the rather tiny Hobbits club. The only downside was that the smoke alarm went off three times during the gig, prompting a slight rewording of one song mid-flow.

They ended up playing a two part set. The first 45 minutes or so was a run through of the set they’ll play tomorrow, the second section was just some extra tracks.

New Model Army – Cheese and Grain, Frome

They were even better than last week. I danced like a loon for a good hour or so, so am a bit broken at the moment and partially deaf.

The venue was very civilised with tables and chairs round the outside. The setlist was broadly similar to last week but with a few minor alterations. The finale of Green and Grey followed by 225 was a fitting ending to the night.

New Model Army – Coventry

Despite the best efforts of the RAC to stop us finding the venue, we finally arrived in time to catch the tail end of the first support band. New Model Army were fantastic as always, we were stood right down at the front, so had a perfect view of the stage. They started off a bit slowly with Whirlwind, Stranger, etc, before finding their feet a bit more with some older material. It was good to hear some old favourites such as No Rest, White Coats, Vagabonds etc. All in all it was a thoroughly good night.

Same again on Tuesday please.

New Model Army – Roadmender, Northampton

It’s the New Model Army time of year again, so I headed up to Kettering on Friday for the weekend. Saturday morning we went for a ride up to Market Harborough for a bag of chips and back, a total of 28 miles and one puncture. Saturday night we headed into Northampton to see New Model Army. It was the last night of the UK leg of the tour, and the night before the 25th anniversary of their first gig. As with last year, they were very very good, the only downside was that it was unbearably hot in the venue as they kept the airconditioning turned off for most of the evening.

New Model Army – The Junction, Cambridge

Last night saw a trip to Cambridge to see New Model Army. The support band was Goldblade, very loud, and very enthusiastic. Good fun to watch although we actually moved back to the bar to avoid the large amounts of bass. Not much to say about New Model Army other than that they were absolutely fantastic. The best live band I’ve seen in a long long time.
