Toys and backs

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008, 9:56 pm

My Asus EEE PC 900 turned up, and after a brief dalliance with Ubuntu 8.04, it’s now running a streamlined copy of Windows XP. Even with essential applications like Firefox and Open Office installed it only uses half of the 4GB flash drive leaving the additional 16GB drive free for porndata. It talks to my phone for mobile data via a USB cable at the moment, a Bluetooth doohickey is on it’s way to replace the old one I appear to have misplaced.

I also appear to have jinxed my back. After saying the other day that it’d been fine lately, I’ve been off work for two days with chronic back ache, I didn’t even make it out of bed until 5pm today. However this evening it’s been sufficiently better to hopefully go back to work tomorrow, there’s only so much daytime television a man can take.

Back to work

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008, 4:35 pm

Back to work today after an extended weekend off. Minor excitement was provided by someone breaking into the old school that forms part of our offices, leaving us a sausage roll and a pasty, and nicking the worst monitor in the building. Other than that it was dead quiet as a lot of people are on holiday at the moment.

It’s “Beer and DVD” night later, we’ll have to come up with something good to watch.

Famous last words

Monday, August 25th, 2008, 1:03 am

“It’s OK, we’ll just go for a quick pint with the girls”.

Too hot to work

Monday, July 28th, 2008, 12:01 pm

It’s just gone past 30oC in the office. Even with the tiny windows open, and two fans blowing air at me, it’s just too hot to concentrate on anything properly. It’s one of the downsides of being stuck in what is probably the worst office in the building.

15:30: it’s up to 33oC now, but it’s just started raining which might help a bit.

Tour Time

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008, 10:01 am

It’s L’Alpe d’Huez day today in the tour, so on the spur of the moment I’ve booked the afternoon off work so I can sit in front of the TV and watch all the action. Should be fun.

This weekend I achieved all my goals

Sunday, July 20th, 2008, 7:57 pm

However, given that my goal was “do nothing”, it wasn’t really that difficult.

Lazy days

Saturday, July 19th, 2008, 8:52 pm

After heading out for beer and a curry last night as the first of two leaving-dos for a colleague, I’ve spent the day doing very little at all. Other than spending 30 minutes cleaning the leather seats in the X-Trail, I’ve lounged in front of the TV watching the Tour de France coverage, and catching up on stuff I’d recorded but not watched.

Tomorrow will no doubt be spent in a similar manner, although there’s probably not much point in cleaning the car seats again.

Resistance is futile

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008, 7:57 am

I’m sat here trying to force myself to ride to work in the pouring rain. It’s one of those things that you know has got to be done, but it’s not going to be pleasant. Now where’s my Goretex jacket?

Happy Birthday to the NHS

Saturday, July 5th, 2008, 8:00 am

The NHS is 60 years old today, and give or take a week or so, I’ve worked there for 25% of it’s life.

Take the children bowling

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008, 8:59 pm

We took four children bowling tonight, ostensibly to celebrate Ethan and Lucien’s birthdays. The bowling wasn’t too bad, although I didn’t win, but the subsequent meal was chaos. At least they were other peoples children and I could come home on my own to some peace and quiet.
